1. 伝統と進化の融合
変化への決意: モダンオリンピック最古の伝統を誇るが、「過去があるから未来があるわけではない」と定義。存続のために「変わらないと死ぬ」という強い危機感を持って進化を優先している。
3つの柱への発展: クラシック（伝統的種目)から、テクノロジーや環境変化を取り入れた「コースタルローイング」「インドアローイング」へと領域を拡大している。
開催エリアの偏り: 現在は東南アジアが力を入れ始めており大会規模も大きくなってきている。アフリカやアメリカでの大会の開催数を増やしていくことがこれからの課題。日本では「自治体や民間企業への売り込み」という特殊なアプローチが必要となっている。
1. Integrating Tradition and Evolution
Commitment to Change:
While rowing is one of the oldest sports in the modern Olympic Games (1896), we are guided by the belief that “having a past does not automatically guarantee a future.” With a strong sense of urgency—summed up by the view that “if we do not change, we will die”—World Rowing has prioritized evolution as essential to its continued relevance.
Development into Three Pillars:
The sport has expanded beyond its traditional “classic” discipline to include Coastal Rowing and Indoor Connected Rowing, incorporating technological innovation and environmental change to broaden its scope.
2. 新しい視聴者と観客の獲得（競技形態の多様化）
コースタルローイング: 自然の「波」を競技に取り入れることで、新しい視聴者層を獲得。この取り組みがLA2028（ロス五輪）での採用決定に繋がった。
コネクテッド（バーチャル）インドアローイング: ローイングマシンを活用したバーチャル世界選手権を開催。テクノロジーを駆使して世界中から参加可能にし、新しい観客層を開拓している。
eスポーツ展開: IOC（国際オリンピック委員会）とは、eスポーツゲームズへの採用についても対話を進めている。
2. Attracting New Viewers and Audiences Through Diversified Competition Formats
Coastal Rowing:
By moving rowing into an open-water marine environment and incorporating natural elements such as waves and surf into the competition format, coastal rowing has broadened the sport’s appeal and attracted new audiences. In particular, the developments in this discipline have directly contributed to an additional inclusion of rowing in the LA2028 Olympic Games, with it being the sole discipline selected amongst 16 that were submitted for review.
Connected (Virtual) Indoor Rowing:
World Rowing has organized Virtual World Championships where athletes compete remotely using connected rowing machines (ergometers), leveraging technology to enable global participation and to be inclusive to even broader groups eliminating challenges of distance of travel for participation.
Development into eSports:
Encouraged by the strong momentum across both the Olympic Movement and the esports community, World Rowing reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the development of the Olympic Esports Games. Discussions are underway with the International Olympic Committee regarding the potential inclusion of rowing, reflecting the rapid growth of Indoor/Connected Rowing and its alignment with this shared ambition. World Rowing is exploring how the discipline can contribute meaningfully to this emerging chapter in sport.
3. 社会課題解決と「ライフパフォーマンス」への転換
エリートスポーツからライフスポーツへ: 「ハイパフォーマンス」の追求だけでなく、健康維持としての「ライフパフォーマンス」へ軸足を広げる。
子供の運動不足解消: ローイングの動作の良さを活かし、子供たちが「身体を使うこと」を楽しいと感じられる魅力的なプロダクトとして提示していく。
JSCとの連携: 日本国内でも「バーチャルローイング」などを通じ、JSCと共に広く深く競技の価値を浸透させる取り組みを実施。
3. Addressing Social Issues and Shifting Toward “Life Performance”
From Elite Sport to Life Sport:
Rather than focusing solely on elite “high performance,” World Rowing is expanding its emphasis toward “life performance,” positioning rowing as a sport that supports lifelong health and well-being.
Addressing Children’s Physical Inactivity:
By capitalizing on the effectiveness of rowing movements, the sport is being presented as an engaging and appealing way for children to enjoy physical activity and develop a positive relationship with movement.
Collaboration with JSC:
In Japan, initiatives such as virtual rowing are being implemented in collaboration with the Japan Sport Council (JSC) to broadly and deeply promote the value of rowing across society.

変革の重要性: 変化は心地よいものではないが、明確な方向性を示し、周囲を説得しながら変わっていくことの重要性を強調している。

While change is not always comfortable, World Rowing emphasizes the importance of clearly defining direction, persuading stakeholders, and advancing transformation with determination.
